“What goes around, comes around...” ~ Willie Nelson

What goes around, comes around…” ~ Willie Nelson

Which came first; the chicken or the egg? Does form follow function or does function follow form? Are successful people more physically fit, or does getting in shape help you succeed?

There are so many things in this world that seem to follow a linear path from cause to effect. It’s almost like there is a cosmic balance between energies and sometimes it is tricky to tell whether the start or end of the process is what made the change. (Perhaps there’s a symbol somewhere that represents this? That would be really handy!)

Take the term “fitness” for example. We commonly referred to it in terms of physical health and ability, but it can also be applied to our mental, spiritual, social, emotional, or financial condition.

Whatever shape you’re in, on any level, comes down to the question of your priorities. Regardless of where you live or what you do to make a living, you’ve always got the ability to make better choices for yourself, even if it’s just to choose a different thought about what you are feeling in the moment.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to personal growth and development, everyone is living a different life, you have your own unique set of circumstances. You can never assume that what works for you is the proper path for anyone else.

At the same time, there is any number of cosmic laws of the universe that seem to respond when we apply them. Try to go against them, and the results are equally predictable. People who love drama for instance, always seem to be embroiled in it!

I’ve been spending more time outside walking on local trails lately. Teresa and I have been cultivating a hiking habit, generally putting in a few miles at least every other day. Nothing too serious, but it was becoming apparent that some balance to all of the hours spent at a desk or behind the screen was a good idea.

Observing the various folks who are out there running, biking, or hiking, has made me ponder the classic chicken or egg conundrum. People who are physically fit seem to be doing better in life in general.

So does this mean that because they appear to be doing well in other areas of their lives, they have the time and energy to devote to fitness? Or is it because they’ve developed the fitness habit that the rest of their life falls into place?

My theory is that when you create a positive feedback loop, it becomes a self-fulfilling cycle. One thing you may have noticed in your own life, dance practice, or other physical activities is that conscious movement has a way of clearing your mind, and opening the way for better ideas and insights to come through.

So it’s almost like priming the pump. You want better ideas and clarity, so you start to shake them loose by getting in motion and letting them flow. Metaphors abound when it comes to these kinds of concepts.

That delicious tomato you recently harvested from your garden didn’t just appear by magic, somewhere along the way you must have planted the seed and cultivated the soil.

That amazing DJ set you heard didn’t just happen by chance, someone decided to start the record collecting habit and learning how to mix a long time ago.

Dance is like that too. Sometimes it might seem like an effort to get off the couch and attend, but as someone once said, the biggest key to success in life is simply showing up. And in today’s action-packed and often outrageous world, it really helps to have a way to ground yourself away from the noise, and connect with your own internal inspiration and intentions.

So whatever it is in life you’re hoping to achieve, perhaps there’s something on the other end of the cycle that you can amp up to help make it happen. The yin-yang symbol with its balanced and constantly flowing polarities is a great visual metaphor to keep in mind if anything feels out of balance.

Because it’s never just the one thing. There’s always a flip-side, or an undercurrent, or an unseen factor, that allows the flower to bloom. Sometimes we have to let go of things into the compost before the next stage of growth can happen!

May your week be one of strength and positivity, be your own cause, and enjoy the effects!

All the best till next Monday,

M+
