This week’s Dance First Spotlight is on Stacey Butcher!

Wow…what a dancing journey this has been the last few years, dancing with the unknown moment by moment. This is where we apply our practice on the dance floor to our everyday lives.

After the pandemic hit, of course, everything changed for us. Like everyone, I had to shift from teaching in person to teaching online. After a year or so, I felt I needed some time to move away from the screen and take time to listen deeply to my own body. So, in April, I left the Bay Area for an adventure. This turned into a 7-month road trip around the U.S. in my Honda Element, which I’ve converted into a “hotelement.” I was practicing a different kind of dance all throughout the U.S.

It’s been an incredible time of following each moment, each breath, to see where it leads me next. I’m so grateful for my movement practice, which has taught me how to flow with life, even when things are difficult and unpredictable.

I’ve settled now in Asheville, NC, and I’m returning to teaching again. I feel refreshed and inspired. In addition to leading the Open Floor Online Community Dances, I’ve also discovered the magic of offering pre-recorded webinars, as well as doing more one-on-work on Zoom.

I have noticed that throughout the pandemic, so many people have become DJs and are leading dances in their areas. This is so great! I’ve had a lot of people contact me about advice for new DJs or movement teachers, most wanting to know techniques for finding and organizing music. In response, I created a Music Tagging Webinar. This webinar is actually part of the Open Floor Teacher Training, but due to popular demand, I’m also making it available to the general public.

Andrea Juhan, one of the founders of Open Floor International, did the webinar and had this to say:

“Stacey’s Music tagging webinar is fantastic, especially if you are just getting started with music collecting. She has some well-thought-out systems about how to tag your music. How you sort, look and find music is super important when it comes to you looking for a track on the fly in the middle of teaching. Or perhaps you are preparing a class and looking for a certain quality of music. Having your music collection well organized really supports your creativity as a teacher. Stacey is clearly methodical, and her work here is a compilation of decades of personal knowledge and her research with a large network of teachers and colleagues – super valuable. I was 30 years into my music collection with an improvised system in place by the time I watched this, and still, I found it to be so helpful.”

I’ve also been diving deeper into connecting with the community one-on-one, both in-person and online. I’ve so appreciated the intimacy and depth of these sessions. One of the new one-on-one offerings I’m really excited about is Inquiry in Motion. In these sessions, I combine the Somatic Experiencing inquiry with movement. I see people expand their movement vocabulary and find ways to move things that are stuck. Let’s keep dancing through life together.
I hope to see you somewhere on the path soon!
Stacey
