“ Consciousness is only possible through change — change is only possible through movement.”
~ Aldous Huxley
What’s the most versatile muscle group in your body? Which part of you is the most agile? How can something vitally important require so little thought?
Everything you do with your body requires an orchestra of coordination. Very few actions require just one muscle moving in one direction.
Brushing your hair, taking a walk, or executing your most complicated dance moves all require a number of different muscles, sinews, and joints working together.
Some things come naturally, others take a lot of practice. Refinement comes with repetition and focus
Anyone can pick up a golf club, a billiard cue, or a tennis racket and mimic the basic moves of the sport. But try hitting a hole-in-one, sinking the eight ball, or acing your opponent without a great deal of practice.
Your body‘s ability to move is nothing short of miraculous. But there’s one group of muscles that we tend to take for granted that go above and beyond when it comes to speed and complexity.
What am I talking about? Well, take that as a hint. If you’d like an example, sit down and listen to any fast talking foreign conversation and try to decipher what the heck they’re talking about.
I’ve been blessed with the opportunity lately to be the odd man out at tables full of French or Italian folks, conversations whizzing past me like dust in the wind.
It’s simply astonishing to marvel at how fast your tongue, lips, and vocal cords can work together to create meaning.
If the listener on the other end of the conversation happened to grow up in the same culture as you, they have no difficulty at all deciphering this complex dance that your vocal muscles are doing.
If, like me, you find yourself a foreigner swimming in the conversation of a strange tongue, it can be like treading water in a fast moving sea. You’re searching for signals on the horizon that will give you some clue to the context.
If movement is a metaphor, then your mouth is miracle. Next time you’re on the move in some other realm, just imagine how skilled your mouth is in mastering your meaning.
Much love and may you be in motion till next Monday,
Merci et à bientôt!
