“ The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless.”
~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
How far back is square one? When was the ever in forever? Why is it that you can just keep on counting and never reach the end?
Infinity is tricky to wrap your head around. All those vast numbers regarding time, space, and the universe make for a slippery set of facts. But the scale always starts in the same place, in your seat of consciousness.
Big numbers, vast distances, and the concept of time can be mind boggling. We often hear terms bandied about with no context. For instance, the difference between a million, a billion, and a trillion.
The numbers sound sort of similar, they’re all big, so our mind settles on ‘big’ and leaves it at that. Connect those terms with units of time, and your brain can start to get a handle on them.
We’re pretty familiar with the humble second, that being one-sixtieth of a minute, maybe a couple of heartbeats. How long is a million of them? About 11-1/2 days. It’s a big jump to a billion seconds, that gets you to nearly 32 years.
So if you can get to a billion or two seconds inside your lifetime, how long until you reach a trillion? Well, unless you are more or less immortal, you’re not going to get there. A trillion seconds adds up to 31,546 years!
Similar mind-boggling calculations happen when things like the number of possible moves in chess or the combinations available in a deck of cards are worked out.
When a number gets bigger than the number of stars in the universe, the grey matter between our ears bogs down. I can barely imagine what life must have been like fifteen or twenty centuries ago, when the Roman amphitheater near our house was in full swing.
But here’s the thing — infinity goes both ways. From the inside looking out, we see ourselves as the starting point of perception. Yet you hold infinite capacity in your consciousness.
I learned something new again this week, as I sometimes do, and realized that there is always room to learn more.
The only limit on your ability to learn is the fact that the body that houses your brain is built to only last somewhere around a century at best.
Your ability to contribute knows no bounds either. Creativity is a well that, once tapped, knows no bottom. When your juices are flowing, there’s always more where that came from.
Dance and movement are another key to the infinite. While there may only be so many different ways your body can move, you’ll never run out of new expressions, combinations, or improvisations.
The symbol for infinity is a horizontal figure eight. Your seat of consciousness spends every present moment dancing at the intersection point in the center.
You’ll always be in the middle of everything else. As Hermes said so long ago — “as above so below”. So wherever you turn, there you go.
Much love till next week!
Merci et à bientôt!
