“ Some days are yellow, some days are blue. On different days I’m different too…”
~ Dr. Seuss
How much do your days vary? Is one day ever truly the same as another? Do they have a certain sound, feeling, or color?
It’s remarkable just how much one day can be so different than the next. You can often discern the tone or vibe or texture or whatever you want to call it within minutes of opening your eyes.
Maybe the sun is out and shining brightly, maybe there’s a thick fog, or it could be that it’s pouring cats and dogs. Or perhaps the dreams you had, the film you watched, or the conversation you engaged in is having a lingering effect upon you.
You can easily observe this in other people. “I think he got up on the wrong side of bed this morning” is one we’ve all heard before. You might make a different assumption about a typically taciturn person who is bouncing along one day with an ear-to-ear grin and a twinkle in their eye.
It’s not to say that your day can’t flip the script halfway through. It’s just that it’s curious how much of the days tone seems to be cast in the earliest moments after waking. Perhaps there’s a ‘right side’ to your bed after all!
I have days where I wake up literally beaming. It’s as if whatever I was dreaming about, whether I can remember it or not, put me on the trajectory for a fantastic day, and I can’t wait to dive in and make the most of it.
Then there’s the days where I’m totally off-kilter. My socks don’t match, I burned my toast, and I’m late to an appointment. I’ll find myself rushing to catch up before I’ve even started. It’s like trying to fit six pounds of oranges into a five pound bag.
On rare occasions I’m like Chicken Little. It feels like the sky is falling. Opening my eyes to a sense of impending doom and feeling like I’m trudging through mud until I encounter the first obstacle of the day. I know to beware, that sense of dread can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
No doubt, all of us prefer the days that beam and twinkle. That said, they can’t all be that way, nor should they be. What would life be without contrast?
I often find myself thinking about a little book by Dr. Seuss that was published after he passed. My Many Colored Days expresses this phenomenon in such a way that even the smallest child can relate. Illustrated with simple colors instead of his usually whimsical characters, it’s lesson in emotional intelligence for all ages.
Aside from learning how to pivot quickly into lemonade when life hands you lemons, the other lesson to be learned here is the importance of tuning into the vibe of the day before allowing too much input.
It takes calm and clarity to set your compass correctly, you have to know which way the wind is blowing before you set your sails. And if the dark days start to outnumber the bright ones, it’s a sign that a larger reset is in order.
Like so many things in this wonderful universe of ours, balance is the key! May you maintain yours on the tightrope as you dance your way through the week!
Much love till next Monday!
