FUNDAMENTALS OF DANCE
INTRODUCTION TO MOVEMENT FUNDAMENTALS WITH BILL EVANS
Welcoming newcomers to dance of all ages.
We will explore fundamental human movement patterns, basics of modern dance and creative movement.
Bill will introduce participants to Bartenieff Fundamentals, gentle full-body movement appropriate for all ages and experience levels. Irmgard Bartenieff was a student of Rudolf Laban (the father of modern dance in Europe) and brought his work to New York City in the 1940s. She became a physical therapist (as well as a dancer and choreographer) and developed a system through which we explore our most basic human movement patterns. Through her work, we gain a deeper awareness of anatomy, sensation, feeling and personal uniqueness. Bartenieff isolated six fundamental movements which underlie all human activity. By investigating our relationships to these fundamentals we become aware of movement habits–both those that serve us and those that could be replaced with more efficient ways of moving. Through set simple choreography and guided improvisation, we will also explore our developmental patterns of total body organization–Breath, Core-Distal, Head-Tail, Upper-Lower, Body-Half and Cross-Lateral.
