Do you have kids? Among the many other “two kinds of people in the world” dichotomies, the gulf that divides parents and people who have never had kids is a wide one.If you’ve never had kids, there’s so many things that are easy to say that seem totally logical like “Well just get a sitter, and we’ll see you at nine!” And if you do have kids, hearing something like “And then after the parent-teacher meeting, we’ve got a birthday party on the other side of town to squeeze in, shopping so we can make 32 cookies for class tomorrow, a costume to finish for the school play, and a diorama of the Arctic tundra to finish before bedtime.” Either statement seems totally normal to other people on your side of the divide, and yet totally outlandish like peering through the wrong end of a telescope when looking across. Not to detract from anyone on either side of the equation, humanities job is to reproduce, and likewise there are many of us, either by preference or circumstance, who best leave the parenting to others. If you’ve got kids, you don’t have to worry about that existential angst that can show up later on in life, and if you don’t have kids you can spend your most productive years setting yourself up for a comfortable future or building a legacy in some other creative way. This topic is on my mind today, because my younger daughter came home from a sleepover Friday night throwing up. I dismissed it as too many doughnuts and a shift in routine, and worked on getting her hydrated and rested. The next day when I found myself nauseous with a fever I admitted that there really was a bug in our bellies, and whatever plans I may have had were out the window.

Musing on this is really just me encouraging a little more empathy all around. Either path is totally viable, and either one requires us to set aside some of that “what might have been” energy. You grow into who you are meant to become, and the key to graceful maturity is being at peace with that.
