Developmental Movement Workshop with Dr. Martha Eddy
(Included in the Somatic Education Module at Moving On Center – School of Participatory Arts and Somatic Research)

May 3-5, 2018 (1-3.30pm)

Workshop aims to provide an experiential framework for movement learning. Principles of movement development will be explored through two primary somatic movement therapy systems – Body-Mind Centering® (BMC) and Bartenieff Fundamentals. Each system incorporates neurodevelopmental movement patterns, reflexes, and righting reactions – the building blocks of motor co-ordination and expressive movement. Further insights will be drawn from motor learning, and educational and psychological theories.

Body-Mind Centering® is an integrated and embodied approach to movement, the body and consciousness. Developed by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, it is an experiential study based on the embodiment and application of anatomical, physiological, psychophysical and developmental principles, utilizing movement, touch, voice and mind. Its uniqueness lies in the specificity with which each of the body systems can be personally embodied and integrated, the fundamental groundwork of developmental repatterning, and the utilization of a body-based language to describe movement and body-mind relationships.

As a somatic practice, Bartenieff Fundamentals focuses on movement re-patterning in a process of deepening sensory awareness. Kinetic ‘chains’ of neuro-muscular patterning become fundamental to all movement organisation early in life, and continue to affect the quality of both function and expression in all our movement experiences.

MARTHA EDDY, RSMT, CMA, Ed.D., founder and director of the Center for Kinesthetic Education (CKE), brings to the fields of health, wellness and education, her strong belief in the power of movement and somatic-awareness to enhance lives. She received her doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in movement science and education in 1998 and has a Masters of Arts in Applied Physiology and a Bachelors degree in Dance Education. She was an adjunct assistant professor in the Teachers College, Columbia University Dance Education Program for ten years. At CKE, in New York City, she maintains a private practice as a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist (RSMT) that involves teaching clients to bring awareness to their movement coordination to enhance functional and expressive capacity. She especially enjoys her work with infants and children with behavioral, perceptual, and/or motor dysfunctions. This practice draws on her decade of training and teaching in neuro-developmental movement therapy with occupational therapist, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, and physical therapist, Irmgard Bartenieff. Her practical application of this work provides a foundation for her SOMAction Movement Therapy Training held biennially in New York and Massachusetts and affiliated with Moving On Center in California, a professional training program that she co-founded with Carol Swann.

This workshop is a part of the SOMATIC EDUCATION MODULE, a four extended weekend training taught by master teachers:

Martha Eddy, (Developmental Movement)
G Hoffman Soto, (Experiential Anatomy)
Carol Swann, (Alexander Technique)
Sarah Day Hanson (Axis Syllabus)
Brenton Cheng (Bartenieff Fundamentals)
Diane Elliot (BodyMind Centering®)
Peggy Hackney (Laban Movement Analysis)
Manuela Mischke-Reeds (Hakomi Somatic Therapy)
Vitali Kononov (Movement Integration)

One year, 4 Weekends: May 2-6, Aug 1-5, Oct 24-28, Jan 23-27

This transformational training offers you a unique opportunity to integrate the desire for personal growth with the development of meaningful professional skills applicable to the performing arts, education, health, and social activism.

Founded in 1994 by Carol Swann & Martha Eddy, Moving On Center continues to be a leading pioneer in Somatic Education. Integrating numerous somatic systems with the performing arts towards social change, Moving On Center will be making its home in 2018 at The Finnish Hall in Berkeley, CA.Finnish Hall is an enormous, beautiful, naturally lit wood floor studio and is currently an exciting new hub of active dance, performance, political and other events.

Changing patterns within your own body/mind through experiential exercises and participatory pedagogy enables one to support others with knowledge rooted in deep embodied knowing.

Given what is going on in the world right now, we truly need more socially conscious body based activists, artists, health practitioners and humans more than ever to counterbalance an environment of fear, dis-embodiment, violence, racism, and marginalization. Spend a year training with MOC in the East Bay and over the course of the year transform your body, mind, and practice so you can bring your work into the world.

Everyone welcome, come join us.
